Waiting for the Rain

A wide backyard lawn under heavy dark storm clouds, with a dense green hedge in the background and a small circular fire pit made of stones in the foreground, suggesting an approaching storm that has not yet arrived.

Welcome to day 16 of my experiment: Going through the Valley of Despair.

The weather forecast today predicted rain for the afternoon. It said it would begin around two o’clock, and indeed everything suggested it was on its way — the sky had darkened, the air had shifted, and even the smell of rain was already present.

We were certain it would arrive. Not just certain — almost waiting for it.

The curious thing is that it never arrived. Even with the forecast confirming it, even with the sky dark and heavy, the rain never fell.

Sometimes, I am like this — waiting for the rain that never comes. It makes sense: it’s better to be prepared than to be caught off guard. The problem is when all attention becomes trapped in the possibility of the storm. When life is lived in function of what might fall from the sky, rather than what is, in fact, happening now.

Because while I wait for the rain, I fail to notice that, despite the clouds, the day goes on — and that not every threat needs to come true to deserve so much energy...

Till tomorrow,
