This subject overflows my heart, lol. There will probably be more posts about it. But today I’m going to talk a little about daily meditation. First of all, to explain it simply and objectively, meditating is nothing more than keeping your mind on the task at hand. focus in something, put all your concentration in something (anything). It’s the real experience the moment.
There are many meditation techniques (standing, sitting, lying down, walking, reciting, silent, with your eyes open, closed, etc.) I won’t go into all of them here, because there are so many, but in all of them the secret is to keep your mind open. focused.
I think many people think that meditation is about not thinking about anything, which isn’t true. I’ll tell you something: when you start meditating, if your mind is set on not thinking about anything, you might get a bit frustrated, because you’ll be thinking about not thinking about anything all the time, and that creates a small feeling that you’re not actually meditating, and meditation doesn’t become interesting that way.
That’s why we choose something to keep us going concentrated (it can be an image, breathing, mantra, music), the trick is to put your full attention in your breathing, for example, then your mind will start thinking about other things and when you remember the purpose of being there you’ll turn your attention to your breathing, don’t try to regulate it, just breathe and pay attention to the air going in and out of your lungs.
Your mind will probably wander 98% of the time, but the more you practice, the easier it will be. Some days 20 minutes feels like 20 hours to me, other days 20 minutes feels like 2 minutes. With time, meditation will become easier and more enjoyable.
Well, why meditate every day? The magic of meditation doesn’t come overnight. Starting with a few minutes a day and gradually increasing is the best way, in my opinion.
There are many reasons to meditate, some meditate to silence the restless mind (called monkey mind in Buddhist philosophy), find peace and quiet, get to know yourself, learn to forgive, connect with faith and your soul, soften the presence of the ego, understand aging and death, see things as they are and not as they seem to us, seek discipline, have more concentration, use it as therapy, and not to mention the physiological, immunological and neurological benefits, such as improving the quality of your sleep, erecting your curvature (if you do it sitting down), improving your attention and reasoning, helping you to have more empathy, improving blood pressure, etc, etc.
Meditation is studied by science as a phenomenon that changes our brain. Meditation changes our cells and the way we see the world and ourselves. I believe that if we taught children to practice meditation from a young age, the world would be a different place. What if every office had a clean, quiet room where you could practice after lunch or simply when you needed to clear your head? Or if it were common and daily practice in schools. That’s the importance of meditation.
And this has nothing to do with religion. Meditation doesn’t depend on any creed. It’s a question of health, especially mental health, which we don’t give much thought to, but if we gave it its due, most of our problems would be solved, because everything that happens in our lives is processed primarily in the mind, so we see everything through it.
The fact is that in order to achieve its many benefits, meditation needs to be practiced every day. This is essential. I think that the greatest act of benevolence towards the world is to seek to evolve ourselves, to seek self-improvement, self-love and to be aware of what is happening in our lives, a task that takes time, but which brings harmony, balance and happiness.
